Snakes of Wake County

The following is a list of snakes that can be found in Wake County.  Of course, species can be found outside of their normal range from time to time so there may be a few others that could wander in.  There are 37 total species of snakes in North Carolina.  Of those, there are 6 species which are poisonous.

Most likely to see:

Might see if your lucky:

Might see but very rare:
Corn Snake
Hognose (Eastern and Southern)
Mole Kingsnake
Redbelly Water Snake
Banded Water Snake

Rough Earth Snake

Chances are very good you could look for these the rest of your life and never find one:
Scarlet snake
Scarlet Kingsnake
Cottonmouth

It is common to hear people, especially fisherman say they see Cottonmouths regularly.  Unless they are in the area linked below, chances are very good they have never really seen a Cottonmouth in Wake County.  It is likely that in every case they are seeing harmless snakes.   The Cottonmouth is rarely found, almost never.  The only ones known of occurred in theBuffalo Creek Cypress Swamp Forest area near Wendell.  There is a cypress area there that is very much like the habitat at the coast.

All of the pictures I used came from the following website which I consider the best there is as far as the Reptiles of NC.

Buy the book.  It has everything you need to know about these animals, it will try it's best to knock the ignorance right out of you and makes a handy reference guide to keep around.
